Token Asian Character releases tell-all

The real-life Dave Kim, who is portrayed by a young actor on ABC’s The Goldbergs is speaking about his life growing up in a predominantly Jewish suburb in the 80’s. He also pokes fun about Hollywood adding a token Asian character in film and TV.
Bar mitzvahs, Breakdancing and Boners is the tell-all book where Dave Kim sets the record straight about growing up with the real life Goldbergs in Jenkintown, PA. He talks about having Jewish holidays off from school, competing for 45’s at bar mitzvah breakdance contests and sporting wood waiting to get picked for a slow dance.
“Every Friday night, I’d stay up late to watch Friday Night Videos to learn a few new moves before the bar mitzvah over the weekend,” said Dave Kim who today still wears his parachute pants while mowing his lawn. “It first started with the moon walk then quickly advanced into trying to spin on my head. Luckily my bowl cut was straight and shiny enough to help me spin faster on my head, while most of the other kids had feathered haircuts or Jewfros that impeded their circular motion.”
Expanding on his adolescence, he embarrassingly says, “my parents didn’t have to teach me about the birds and bees. We just kind of figured it when we were slow dancing during Champagne Snowball and our body parts kind of fell into place. Luckily polyester did not stain and our cheap Sears suits didn’t require washing before next weekend’s parties.”
Commenting on his character in the sitcom, Dave Kim said, “Unlike, token Asian characters like Long Duk Dong in Sixteen Candles (played by Gedde Watanabe), Eric in the Twilight saga (played by Justin Chon) and Mindy in Emily in Paris (played by Ashley Park), Dave Kim is actually based on an actual real live person. I’m proud of the character and how he is portrayed on the show.”
Lastly, Dave Kim hopefully commented on his Hollywood future, “I’m hoping that as The Goldbergs winds down, the producers create a spinoff show just based on my life after high school where I become Big Man on Campus at UCLA. Many east coasters don’t realize that UCLA stands for University of Caucasians Lost among Asians. Since I’d grown up with so few Asians, everyone thought that I was so cool that I was able to navigate college life just like Van Wilder and David Wooderson.”
Great article. I love the Goldbergs. Granted, there are a lot of things I don’t get at first. I literally ask my Jewish friends at work what some things mean the next day at work. But, I do know I am a mensch. That’s what they say I am. And I know that’s good. I really liked reading this.
